In House Legal Counsel

We are seeking an In House Legal Counsel on a permanent basis, located at either our London or Folkestone offices.

Summary

Provides commercial legal counsel to the International EU Division (currently UK, France & Germany) and certain export markets on a wide range of business, marketing, sales, and commercial contract matters, and EU Data Privacy and Security compliance issues. 

Role Accountabilities and Responsibilities   

  • Responsible for providing general commercial counsel and support to the EU Division and EMEA export region on a wide range of commercial, transactional, regulatory and international matters, directly and with the assistance of outside counsel as needed.
  • Work with cross functional business teams as well as other members of the US Law Department to provide comprehensive advice to clients on legal risk analysis, commercial transactions, and advising on privacy and data protection concerns in the EU.
  • Draft and negotiate complex contracts in support of third party global sales regulatory networks and provide lead counsel on contract compliance and issue resolution.
  • Work on special projects as assigned to improve service and meet client needs including M&A due diligence and integration, contract and trade compliance.
  • Advise on privacy by design and default in relation to the development and deployment of data driven initiatives, including providing legal advice on functionality requirements, appropriate fair processing notices, privacy policies, automated processing and profiling and supporting the business with meeting data governance requirements.
  • Active management of the instruction of external lawyers with a view to minimize external expenditure while achieving the highest level of service.

Education and Experience   

  • A skilled solicitor or barrister entitled to practice in the UK or a relevant jurisdiction with experience from a leading law firm and/or in-house, ideally in the CPG/technology/digital industry with working knowledge of EU Privacy including GDPR.
  • 7-10+ years of law firm and/or in-house corporate law experience drafting and negotiating commercial transactions.

Skills and Competencies

  • Diverse transaction and project management experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize and organize multiple tasks.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work in a diverse team, collaborate with other functions and interact with corporate management and others at all levels.
  • Demonstrated broad business orientation and ability to aggressively establish instant credibility as an attorney, change agent, and business partner with cross functional perspective.
  • The right candidate must have experience with Data Protection and be happy to advise on data protection laws and regulation (employee and consumer) including GDPR.
  • Fluency in a 2nd language (French or German) is desirable but not essential
